VISIONARY ART BY ADRIANE ENNS

The Heart of My Process

“Visionary artist”: a term coined by Carl Jung in 1935 to describe the way some artists strive to connect with something bigger than themselves when they create. In his book “Modern Man in Search of a Soul” he describes the creative process of a visionary artist as “a kind of innate drive that seizes a human being and makes him its instrument.”

This sums it up well for me.

As an artist, my craft in large part is to meet what I’m creating halfway. I go into a sort of meditative state that provides the sensitivity to guide and shape as well as to listen. I very much feel like an instrument when I’m in that state and have described my creative process to others in that way many times in the past. I think this is why I, as someone who is fairly shy in certain ways, can agree with someone when they say they really like a particular piece I’ve made. I would say “yeah, I really like that one too”. . .like, it’s not personal.

WHERE STRUCTURE MEETS FLUIDITY

Enneye is the name I’ve recently chosen for my art emanations into the world, and its’ connected philosophy. The word is a play on NI as “natural intelligence”- which to me when it comes to art is art not created by a computer. It’s created by other technology- the technology of an organism made up of cells made up a nucleus and organelles. A nucleus that contains DNA that carries the codes so that our cells can continue to carry out their millions of different specialized and incredibly intelligent roles. A DNA knowing that has evolved through experience. . . we are guided by so much more than we realize in this “modern world” of plastics, processed food and screens! We are also more than the sum of our parts.

I think the art that comes by me wants to reach out and spark a moment of remembering the beauty of this, and who we are. How we were made, how we are, how we live- how we are ALIVE. To give moments of feeling that in the day when it’s seen .

Principles of My Artwork

  • Compelling Designs:    My artwork finds harmony between structure and fluidity to create visually engaging pieces.
  • Rich Use of Colour:    I incorporate a vibrant, layered approach to colour, experimenting with bold and unexpected combinations to evoke a dynamic visual experience.
  • Multi-Medium Techniques:    My creations utilize oil pastels, paint pens, and pencil crayons, allowing for diverse textures and depth in each piece.
  • Meditative and Reflective:    The process of creating art fosters a sense of calm and mindfulness, offering viewers a meditative experience as they connect each work.
  • Personal and Universal Connection:    My art reflects both personal practice and universal patterns, creating a blend of organic shapes with larger themes.
  • Synesthetic Inspiration:    My sensitivity to and use of colour, developed over time with a variety of media, drives the connections between shades and forms in my work.
  • Evolving Artistic Journey:    From childhood doodles to intricate, colourful designs, my art has grown alongside me, with each piece reflecting a continuous evolution of technique and expression.
  • Invitation to Explore:    Each piece of art is an invitation to journey through its layers of colour, pattern, and meaning, offering a space for viewers to connect with the work in their own way.

About the Art I Make

My work centers around mandalas and other designs I develop freehand on their own or with historical symbols as their seed. The latter is something I’ve been exploring most recently.

At the heart of my process is thousands of hours of practice exploring structure and fluidity with unerasable black ink, and nothing measured out beforehand. My process is very intuitive, with my role as the artist being like a hybrid of instrument and inventor. After the structure is established, I often bring in colour in layers with different materials from inks to pencil crayons to oil pastels.

It evokes deep cellular memory of our origins of life, and our journey through time as humans on this planet.

I’m strongly influenced by the art of indigenous cultures from around the world that make art by hand, today and deep in our history. I consider myself part of a long and vast lineage of artists who create intuitive designs by hand.

I also love colour in a way that’s hard to describe.
